Sports injuries will be the subject of a free health forum to be presented by Dr. Robert Rutkowski on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Culpeper Memorial Hospital at 7:30 p.m.

“This presentation is designed for people who are active and want to remain that way,” said Dr. Rutkowski, an orthopedic surgeon with Virginia Orthopaedic Center in Culpeper.

Dr. Rutkowski will cover many types of sports injuries, their treatment and prevention. He will also describe arthroscopy, a surgical procedure used to diagnose and repair some injuries resulting from sports accidents.

Sports medicine, however, is much more than orthopedic surgery. A wide field, sports medicine ranges from physical therapy through several medical specialties such as orthopedists, « cardiologists, -rheumatologists, internists and others.

The approach of sports medicine is to encourage a healthy lifestyle and to resolve problems in order to allow individuals to continue participation in their chosen activities.

“Although there are many important subjects in sports medicine, my involvement as an orthopedic surgeon is usually with injuries, and this program will give a general overview with emphasis on what interests those who attend,” said Dr.
