In fiscal year 1987-88, the American Heart Association awarded $63 million in funding for research into heart disease.
Still, despite this massive effort, heart disease is the country’s leading cause of death. In 1986, it caused 46.6 percent of all deaths. In Rappahannock County, one of every two residents die of heart disease or related ailments.
The risks of heart disease can be minimized by regular physical examinations, not smoking, eating nutritious food in moderate amounts and having a blood pressure checkup at least once a year.
