For students who intend to pursue their education 'beyond high school, enrichment and advance placement courses offer them a chance to reach beyond the basics. It ^challenges the student, and colleges look at that when they ^consider applications for admissions. ► For students not planning to go past high school>elective courses enable them to pursue subjects of interest to them. ;And, who knows, that pursuit may cause some of them to change their minds about college or trade school. That too would be a benefit.
The board’s decision to establish the “Superintendent’s Super Stars” was another example of its commitment to academic excellence on all levels. It recognizes that effort is a necessary component of the pursuit of excellence, and that consistent devotion and struggle for academic success should be rewarded—even if the student’s achievement falls short of the standards for the Honor Roll.
The board also approved further study on the idea of establishing a program for students to gain college credit for courses taken while still a student at RCHS. It’s yet another alternative for academically advanced students, and one which deserves further consideration. While there may be certain limitations, some students would certainly benefit from the opportunity.
