However, Mr. McCarthy pointed out, the county would not want the expense of putting up and maintaining speed-limit and stop signs for private roads, so the Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction would only be extended to those streets if the homeowners would be willing to be responsible for the signs. Enforcing motor-vehicle laws on those streets would not mean that state maintainance wguld be extended to them, Mr. McCarthy added.
The Board of Supervisors agreed to hold a public hearing on these issues at its January meeting.
Extending the Sheriffs Department jurisdiction into the Shenandoah National Park was also on last Monday’s agenda. Commonwealth Attorney Peter Luke said, “We were approached by the Park. We don’t have any jurisdiction there; it’s covered by Federal law. They want to cede overlapping jurisdiction. John and I both have some question on what it’s going to cost Rappahannock County.”
Sheriff John Henry Woodward explained that the Federal government is interested in ceding overlapping jurisdiction over all its property in Virginia. “The Sheriffs Association has fought against it. We’re afraid they’re going to cut back. I see a lot more being thrown on us,” he said. ^
