Drinking and driving is traditionally high during the Christmas holiday season, as more people attend parties and more motorists are on the roads visiting families and friends. Weather conditions may add to the hazard, making driving while impaired a particularly dangerous decision.
We urge our readers to play it safe this holiday season. Drink responsibly, and if you do drink, don’t drive. A designated driver may be rotated among members of a group, with different people taking the responsibility on different nights.
Many people pledge not to drink and drive, but actually keeping the promise is sometimes difficult. Rationalizations like, “I’ve only had a couple,” or “I’ve eaten, I’ll be fine,” or “I’ll stop and get a cup of coffee,” can be killers.
And even if there’s no accident involved, a DUI conviction means stiff fines, a possible jail term and possible loss of your driver’s license. State and local police have once again joined the Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE) which means more patrols and more routine checkpoints, thereby increasing your chances of being caught. It’s just not worth it to drink and drive.
There’s nothing wrong with being the life of the party, but choosing to drive after drinking can end that life, as well as other innocent lives as well. It’s a big chance, and not worth the risk.
