The board approved Sheriff Woodward’s request to purchase recording equipment to tape calls coming into the county dispatch office, which handles both law enforcement and fire and rescue incidents.
The sheriff explained that he had applied for a grant and had received one for $17,705. “My part to pay is 11 percent,” he said. He said he had had to request bids to go in as part of his grant request and that after he received the grant he had again requested bids.
For $1,400- more, he told the board members he could purchase “the best, most up-to-date model,” a 9000 series recording system from Dictaphone which costs $22,521. He explained that it would handle up to 20 phone lines coming in and would run for up to 24 hours at a time.
He said he plans to keep the tapes for one month and then “rotate them over” if they were not needed for evidence in court.
Sheriff Woodward said that with six phone lines and four radio frequencies, ten lines were already committed. “You need 20 lines,” he said. He explained that his budget could cover the extra $1,400.
“Is this compatible with 911?” Mr. Estes asked.
