Mary Jane Swift, 34, of Huntly was convicted of possession of marijuana by a Rappahannock County Circuit Court jury last month.
She was sentenced by Judge Raynor Snead to 30 days in jail, to be served on 15 consecutive weekends, and fined $500.
Mrs. Swift had been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, a more serious felony charge with a possible penalty of five to 20 years in prison. The jury verdict indicated that the Commonwealth failed to prove the intent to manufacture but did prove Mrs. Swift’s possession of the illegal drug.
The charge stemmed from a July 1988 search of her rented home and property on Route 634 at the base of Chester Gap.
