“We washed the clothes and cleaned up the toys and other items with help from the Brownies and Girl Scouts,” and the meaning of Christmas — the gift of giving — was exhibited to “anyone who’s seen hard times,” Kndll said.
This year Rappahannock’s Support-the-People giveaway is 10 a.m.3:30 p.m., this Saturday, Dec. 16, in the Washington Fire Hall. County Scouts, church women and youngsters will act as elves, assisting people with selection as items are given away to anyone with need.
“We’ve had a pretty good response this year,” organizer Peggy Banker said of the project. Mrs. Banker, with help from her colleague Janet Smoot, have picked up items from all over the county. Boxes outside the fire station have been drop points for other items. ‘We’ve cleaned up the items and wrapped the toys,” Mrs. Banker said, adding the group is nearly ready for Saturday’s giveaway.
Santa will make a visit at 1 p.m., and county Scouts plan to spread the festive cheer after a successful giveaway with caroling through the Town of Washington.
