Often, Dr. Gangel added, he confers with superintendents in surrounding counties to get some idea of conditions which might affect the county’s fringe areas.
Though the county instituted a delayed opening policy to try to minimize the necessity of closing school completely. Dr. Gangel said that, so far,, that option has not even been a consideration. The conditions have just been too bad, he said, although that option will be used, if possible, in the future.
As of mid-week, Dr. Gangel said, no decisions have been made about how additional snow days will be made up. Possibilities, he said, include paring additional days off the Christmas and spring vacations, eliminating in-service days, extending the school year beyond its scheduled end in early June, and scheduling classes on Saturdays.
“It's the superintendent’s discretion about how' to make up the days," Dr. Gangel said. “We have a number of options. There’s been no decision made a this point *— until we get into the need there’s no sense in committing to specifics.”
