When any party loses three consecutive gubernatorial elections — the Democrats in the late ’60s and ’70s and the Republicans in the ’80s — there is an inevitable clamor for change.
Thus, little more than a month after the Virginia GOP was again swept in the statewide balloting, some are demanding a top-to-bottom housecleaning of the state party’s leadership.
Party chairman Don Huffman and the Republican Party of Virginia staff in Richmond are natural targets of the finger pointing, which is likely to continue.
Yet there are some cooler heads within state Republican ranks who, while acknowledging the undisputed value of leadership, believe the road to future victory lies in a return to fundamentals that made the party strong and prosperous in the last decade.
