“It’s more than just fruit baskets,” he said with pride. “We spend some time with each of the people. Whether they are in a nursing home or at home, they enjoy it. Their faces just light up when we come in.”
With box or basket cost, the assembly — usually done by Hackley’s Store in Amissville — and delivery time considered, the Ruritans find themselves busy elves a week before Christmas, bringing cheer to more than 50 of their neighbors in nursing homes, families or those alone over the holidays.
A special delivery, such as the type the Ruritans offer, brings a heartwarming feeling to Christmas — the feeling of caring.
Social Services representative Marie Davis knows this feeling. After years of participating with the Social Services vegetable and fund drive, the county’s care for fellow men is evident.
“Last year we even had a lady give Christmas trees,” Mrs. Davis
