It shouldn’t happen, but it does. Since May, five people have been killed in highway construction or maintenance work sites in Virginia. Three of these deaths occurred in September — a motorist and two surveyors in separate accidents.
For your readers, I have this message: Across the state, you are seeing more highway improvements than ever before — projects that are a necessity for the people of Virginia. On the highway before all of these projects, you’ll see orange signs warning of the upcoming highway work. I urge you to take these signs seriously.
During the past three years, the Virginia Department of Transportation has done more than install signs to protect motorists and our employees. We’ve emphasized enhanced safety engineering at the sites, employee training, better enforcement and public safety education. These
