retired as a master sergeant from the Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He was a Baptist. He was also a member of Langley-BathClearwater American Legion Post No. 153 and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Also surviving are his wife, Virginia Willis Smoot; two sons, Taylor W. Smoot, Jr., of Ga. and Robert Smoot of S. C.; four daughters, Sorya S. Greene, Bonnie S. Fulghum, Teresa S. Laster and Tracy Smoot, all of S.C.; four brothers, Harvey T. Smoot of Delaware, William R. Smoot, Sr. of S.C., Bunny S. Smoot of Maryland and Raymond L. Smoot of Sperryville, three sisters, Mary Edna S. Dennis of Amissville, Mildred S. Riley of Warrenton and Peggy S. Parmley of Michigan; one half-brother, Johnny L. Smoot Sr. of Front Royal and two half-sisters, Donna Sue Smoot and Jo Ann Smoot, both of Washington and five grandchildren.
Graveside servcies with full military honors took place Aprill 11 in Sunset Memory Gardens in Langley, S.C.
Members of the military were pallbearers. Members of the Aiken County Sheriffs Department were honorary pallbearers.

Sampson Roe Cook Sr., 70, of Niceville, Fla. died April 2 at his home.
Mr. Cook was born in Culpeper and had lived in the Niceville area
