Yet the convenient solution also gobbles up precious reserves, resources and ultimately, landfill space, while adding more pollutants to our air and land. We have many alternatives regarding our consumption of resources. Now we must weigh their benefits and disadvantages on a larger, global scale.
Conservation: Those products that we must use anyway must also be used wisely. Over-packaging saps our dollars as well as our resources; nearly one dollar in ten spent on food and beverages pays for packaging, which is often soon discarded. Half of this nation’s paper is used solely to wrap and decorate consumer goods. While some packaging may be necessary, much is simply wasteful.
We tend to consider the supply of trees, water, fuels, clean air and fertile soils as limitless. In a way, they can be, if only we adopt reverent attitudes toward their use.
