To the editor:
With the celebration of Earth Day 1990 next weekend and “the year of the environment” well into its second quarter, hopefully a new sense of awareness for what we as individuals can do to preserve and conserve our world is beginning. By educating ourselves and our children with some of the problems and some simple solutions to those problems that each of us can do at home (without drastically changing our lifestyles), our children will be able to enjoy this Earth as we have.
Because of the increasing population of Rappahannock County alone, one of the areas that is a growing concern is the wastefulness in the manufacturing of disposable paper and plastic products, such as the disposable diaper. Americans throw away eighteen billion disposable diapers a year — enough to stretch to the moon and back seven times. About 1 percent of all landfill space is being occupied by disposable diapers.
