third of the county’s residents have library cards. With the addition of Diane Green last fall, the library now has a full-time accredited librarian. “But,” Mr. Jamieson added, “without our volunteers we could not keep it going.”

Last year, the library applied for a state grant to assist with the new building, but was rejected. That means that all the money for the new building must be raised from private sources.

Mr. Jamieson said the finance committee is preparing a presentation for foundations which might be interested in making a gift toward the project. But, he pointed out, those sources usually look carefully at the local support for the project before agreeing to become a donor. “Obviously, the more money we have on hand from the local community the better it looks to foundations. They are reluctant to be pioneers -- or to go in on a project without assurance of its completion.”

There are few costs associated with the the fund drive, he added. Only the costs of printing the materials and postage will be deducted from the proceeds. “Virtually every dime that comes in will go toward the building fund. The commit
