The visit will be remembered by the Thomas family long after Roy comes home. “It’s not every day that the players from a major college basketball team take time out to go over to the hospital to see a little kid,” Mr. Thomas said. “I don’t know how to say Thanks’ to them -we really appreciate it. I know he did.”
After the players said goodbye to Roy, one visitor stayed behind to talk for a few minutes. The poster, team picture and T-shirt were spread on his bed as he talked about the visit. “Coach said I was getting a surprise, but I didn’t know what it was going to be. Coach Leake wouldn’t tell me — he just laughed. I was shocked,” Roy said, shaking his head. “I’m not believing this.”
Carol Johnson, with the U.Va. basketball program, said, “The players really enjoyed it. John Crotty in particular told me how much they eryoyed doing it.”
Coach Leake said Blundin, Crotty and Stith were Roy’s personal favorite players. “Whenever we talked about U.Va. basketball, he mentioned those three players right away.”
As his visitor shook hands before leaving, Roy added, his smile spreading almost from ear to ear, “I’m feeling a lot better now.”
