U.Va. Hospital to implant a rod in his back to straighten his spine, which had become curved and was interfering with his breathing.
“He never complains,” his father Roy said. “He’s a good boy.” The visit from the basketball team really lifted his spirits, Mr. Thomas added. “Roy was tickled pink about it."
And, apparently the visit helped Roy’s physical condition as well. His transfer to the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville had been delayed last Thursday when his doctor discovered indications of a possible infection in his lungs. So the players came to the hospital instead of the Kluge Center, as had originally been planned.
“There was the threat he might develop pneumonia,” Mr. Thomas explained, “but yesterday evening (Thursday) they said it was clearing up,” and Roy was transferred to the Kluge Center. “It was quite a positive thing for him all the way around.”
Mr. Thomas said that Roy will be at the Kluge Center until sometime this week, and will probably spend about another week at home before
