Recylcing: Once we learn to temper our consumption and to conserve that which we do need, we must recycle what is left. Recycling of any product reduces the need to manufacture from raw materials: saving valuable resources, energy and dollars. Recycled materials are “good as new” and, in fact, sometimes better! Recycled paper is more opaque, dense, and flexible than its brand new counterpart.
One factor limiting the success of recylcing is the lack of demand for goods made from recycled objects. Use your buying power to insist upon recyclable materials, recycled paper and plastic products, and redeemable bottles.
Shenandoah National Park is a fine example of a recylcing success story. Once an scarred landscape of logged timber and eroded soils, Shenandoah shows how nature can reclaim abused land: developing thick fertile soils, dense mature forests and clear mountain waters in half a century.
Even today, Shenandoah buffers environmental threats: acidic rain is partially neutralized as it filters through the soils.
