In the women’s catagory, Flint Hill’s Nina Stamer has two and is vying for her third.
“I’m running about 40 miles a week,” the dedicated runner said. “I’m going to try for another,” Smith Memorial.
But, notable runners from near and far come for the reward. Virginia Savings Bank of Front Royal will reward $300 to the runner breaking the course record — or $150 if both records for male and female are broken.
Steve Pinard of Hartwood holds the 31.26 record for men — set in 1985, while Kim Belyea of Winchester holds the women’s course record of36.46 — set in 1984.
While serious runners prepare for months, some find the course less threatening. Allison Martin, daughter of Jerry and Mary Beth Martin of Washington, has been brought up on Fodderstack’s hills.
At four, Allison walked the entire course with her mother. “It was the longest day,” the young girl, now 15, said to be the youngest to walk the entire course, admitted. At seven, Allison started running the course, alone.
“I’m thinking about doing it this year,” she said with ease, adding that in preparation she climbs the hill behind her Washington home several times. Her workouts must pay off as she’s won two pottery trophies, a second place at the age of 12 and a third place last year.
