Leading the pack of sophomores is Jason Settle, another 6*2” forward, Leake said. He was one of the team’s top rebounders in the first scrimmage and Leake is impressed with his jumping ability and agressive inside play. Leake believes that Settle will have a good season this year in part because opponents will be concentrating on guarding Williams and Jolliffe. “He scored 25 points in the first scrimmage, including five for eight shooting from three-point range,” Leake pointed out.
Paul Brown is another sophomore with varsity experience. He played in seven games last year as a freshman, he was promoted to the varsity from the J.V. squad in midseason to fill in after injuries sidelined several players.
Brown is another player who showed his abilities in the first scrimmage this season with seven steals, “he is a definite standout and he will be used this year to help with full court pressure and offensive ball control,” Leake said.
Ray Atkins is coming up from the J.V. squad this year. “Like Brown he is a very aggressive defensive player. Any time there is a loose ball on the floor, I know he will be close, usually head first,” Leake said.
Inserted into last week’s scrimmage in the second quarter, Atkins managed to score 12 points in only four minutes.
Shane Lambert comes to the basketball team after completing a season on the cross-country team. The sophomore forward is in great physical shape, Leake said. He is probably one of the best all-around athletes on the team, Leake added. “This young man realy has no limitations,” said Leake, who plans to use Lambert to raise up the defensive tempo when needed.
“In my seven years here I have had only two freshmen make the varsity team,” Leake said. The first was james Roy who graduated last year and the other is jason Brown, a 5’4” point guard.
He was promoted to the varsity squad after running the point guard position for the eighth grade Junior Panther squad last season. “Called scooter by his teammates, he has earned a lot of respect for his court poise and hustle,” Leake said.
