ties in Fauquier County. According to Helen Bridges of Washington, her grandchildren, visitng for the Thanksgiving holiday, were hiking down Jenkins Mountain when they spotted a raccoon in a tree. The animal, not normally seen during daylight hours, was behaving strangely. “It was spitting at the children, chattering and showing its teeth,” Mrs. Bridges said. The youngsters climbed on the back of a jeep for the ride back to their grandparents’ home and when they passed the raccoon, it jumped out of the tree and chased the jeep up the mountain. Mrs. Bridges said that her husband was alarmed by the unusual behavior, shot the animal and took its body to the Fauquier Health Department offices where it was confirmed as being rabid.
