that even though the Park Service came up $48 million short of what it asked for, the budget is $39 million more than it was in 1992.
“We do not have enough funds for fiscal year 1993 to operate the entire park at the levels of quality and quantity we had hoped for,” park superintendent J.W. Wade said last week. “This action is being taken to focus our efforts to provide the highest possible protection to our resources.”
Ms. Suzich said that park officials at Tuesday’s meeting stressed the point that Shenandoah National Park was not singled out for what many observers call an irrational move. Instead, one of the area’s most scenic landmarks, one of hundreds of national parks across the nation, just happened to submit its cost-cutting proposal first.
But critics of the proposed closing say that the savings — $200,000 — are paltry, and hardly warrant the economic blow to the surrounding area.
