The major business of the local meetings will be to elect delegates to the state conventions at which the nominees will be officially selected. And so for those who want to be nominated for governor, lieutenant governor or attorney general the mass meetings are crucial.
All strategy for such meetings must hinge on bringing to them the largest possible number of people who are willing to vote for delegates to the state convention who will support your candidacy. Thus such meetings become body counts. Get your troops to the front lines and then seek to use the party rules to whatever advantages you can wring out of them.
Such mass meetings often turn ugly and prove divisive, but since they get far less coverage than a hotly contested primary the damage usually isn’t as severe.
