RICHMOND - Veterinary laboratories operated by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will implement a new fee structure for non-regulatory analytical tests on Jan. 1,1993.
Fees will be charged for discretionary tests performed to diagnose diseases or for export requirements, but not for those tests mandated in accordance with VDACS. regulatory requirements. The previously existing fees will be incorporated into the new fee structure.
Most charges will be under $6. Only a few will exceed that amount, such as a necropsy at $36 to determine cause of death for a farm animal, or $45 to determine cause of death for a pet or exotic animal. Payment will be required at the time of service. Veterinarians may be billed, as has been customary in the. • past, provided they have signed the submission form requesting the test.
“We already conduct some testing on a fee basis,” said Dr. William Sims, state veterinarian and director of the VDACS Division of Animal Health. “Funds from the new schedule will help us continue to provide high quality testing and services to farmers and veterinarians around the state. We’ll be in a better position to maintain our equipment and add the most current testing technologies, which will mean more efficient service for our customers. The charges are comparable with those of other states.”
VDACS maintains six regional laboratories, including one in Warrenton.
