points per season, and led the team is assists per game with five. "These two (Williams and Jolliffe) need to lead us throughout the season,” Leake said.
"Jolliffe has improved his game tremendously since last season. He is now our outside threat on offense”, he said. His mqjor improvements have been on defense where he works well in the full court press, Leake said.
“Although we introduce zone defenses to the eighth grade junior Panthers and continue to teach them, we prefer a man-to-man defense,” he said. “We do use zone pressure in some situations, but never as a passive defense. We will use a zone press, either full court or half court, but our zone defenses will routinely be match-up types, where one player is always playing man-to man”, he explained.
Pendleton has the inside nod as starting point guard for Leake. “He is an excellent ball handler and passer but he specializes in pressure defense,” Leake said.
“I anticipate he will play against every team’s leading scorer,” Leake said. Pendleton played in only nine games last season, but continued to work hard during the off season, Leake added.
Leake’s fourth senior on this year’s squad is Juergen Venema, a foreign exchange student from Germany. He is the team’s tallest player at 6’4”. This will be the thrid consecutive year that an exchange student has made the RCHS basketball team. “He lacks the experience of the American game that the others have,” Leake said, “but he doesn’t lack the determination.” Leake added that Venema has shown dra
