Some sinkholes are simply shallow depressions in the ground, like dried-up ponds; some are filled with water that either fluctuates with the water table or rushes forth in the form of a spring; some, like the onejn Berryville, are sheer-sided, deep holes with horizontal drainage channels.

Some people have speculated that the Berryville sinkhole opened in connection with a well drilled in the Bartleses’ front yard just weeks before the hole collapsed. The company drilled for several days but never struck water. Instead, the bit brought up load after load of mud. The hole collapsed less than a month later.

Cooper admitted the removal of that much mud could have influenced the collapse, but he said it
