“I suspect preciptation was the driving force behind the opening,” he said. “The water table is up, and that dissolved more and more soil from the roof and sides, and it simply collapsed.” The mud most likely came from a horizontal drainage channel of the hole, not the hole itself, he said.
Cooper noted that the Shenandoah Valley is not the only area of Virginia that contains sinkholes. There are also many in Loudoun County, particularly in the area along Route 15 north of Leesburg.
In fact, he said, a sinkhole that contains a spring is located on the left side of Route 15, just as it leaves the town of Leesburg and heads north. The formation is known as Big Spring.
