Warren County is suffering from unemployment that exceeds 12 percent, and Board of Supervisors chairman Staige Miller immediately registered his complaint about the economic impact of the closing.
“Such closure will have severe economic consequences on the already troubled economy of Front Royal and Warren County,” he wrote to Wade last week.
The closing would be “devastating to our tourist industry ... a significant blow to the local economy,” the Front Royal town council added.
While park officials claim that only 10 percent of park visitation will be affected by the six-month closure and the effects on tourism will be negligible, Warren County officials note that the drive — whose northern entrance is just outside Front Royal — will be closed during several of the most popular and wellattended local festivals, including the Apple Blossom Festival and, this year, the Tour duPont.
