People in general realize there will be races for governor, lietenantgovemor and attorney general next year, but have1 scant knowledge of how the candidates on whom they will be asked to pass judgement in the fall will earn the right to have their names listed on the ballot.
In bygone days when Virginia was essentially a one-party state, Democrats always had primary elections and winning the primary was tantamount to winning the general election.
With the rise of a two party system the primary system was eventually all but abandoned because it often left the nominee weakened while heading into the bigger battle. The GOP decision to briefly resurrect the primary in 1989 proved a very bad call.
So the method used by Republicans and Democrats to choose statewide nominees next year will be so-called “mass meetings.” of local party units that lead to state conventions.
In the first few months of the year, Democratic and Republican party units in every city and county in Virginia will hold individual meetings to which will be invited anyone
