The hole continues to devour the surrounding soil. Once confined to the center of the house, it now extends about three feet beyond the foundation. There, the smooth ground falls away into a ragged lip. The sides are steep and sheer; the hole itself, cylindrical. Splinters and shards of the first, floor lie, like toys thrown down by an angry child, at the bottom of the shaft. It appears black, unfathomable.
Last week, McDanel rescued some of the family’s personal belongings. Secured by a life-line, with firefighters on hand to haul him out if the ground convulsed again, he entered the house and retrieved a school band instrument, some clothing, furniture and sentimental keepsakes. He will most likely be the last person to enter the house; certainly the Bartles family never will again.
