“We recommend that women come in and watch people on the shooting range actually firing their weapons,” he said.
If the customer watches for a while and feels like she wants to try and shoot, there is a manager on the range to show her how.
“It may be that actually shooting the weapon is more than what they want to do right off the bat. You don’t want to scare them off,” said Clark.
The surge in women’s purchases of handguns started four or five years ago at Clark Brothers, though the increase was gradual. At that time, there were increases in the number of men buying guns for the home and their wives.
Clark referred to “Armed and Female” by Paxton Quigley about the growth in women’s use of weapons. The book gives a history of women being attacked and real stories of women who’ve been victimized.
However, both Clark and the book suggests that any woman who is afraid of guns and isn’t comfortable around them, shouldn’t consider purchasing one —even for self-defense. There are other methods such as karate, that can help in an assault situation.
