The Rappahannock Panther youth football team finished the regular season Saturday without a win, but coach Tony Hoffman feels it has been a very successful “learning year” for his young squad.
The team will face the Culpeper Fighting Bulls in a playoff Saturday in Culpeper.
“We had a lot of young players,” Coach Hoffman said. “They have learned a lot this year, and we can build on that for next year.”
He expects most of this year’s players to return for the season next year. He notes that many of his players have never played organized football before while players in Fauquier County start playing football when they are 6 and Culpeper players start when they are 8. Although leagues in those counties will accept players from Rappahannock only a few of his players had that experience.
By helping to organize the Skyline Travel League this year, Mr. Hoffman has made it possible for a Rappahannock team to be formed. The league for players from 12 to 15 years old was mostly started from scratch. The Culpeper team had equipment, but the other three teams, including the Rappahannock team had to purchase new equipment. The players pay a $50 registration fee, but the cost to put a player on the field is about $450, he explained. The league had some help from sponsors but the players and fans have also engaged in various fundraising activities, and those activities will continue, he said.
