The biggest unknown in the President’s plan is what it will cost and who’s going to pay the bill. We all agree that health care costs too much now. To pay thousands of dollars a day for a hospital stay is exorbitant. Insurance claim forms are hard for me and my employees to understand, not to mention how confusing they must be to many patients.
If it’s not an insurance company adminstrator looking over my shoulder as I practice medicine, it’s a lawyer. President Clinton seems to recognize these concerns.
Hopefully, the system will get better, and physicians across Virginia are committed to see to it that it does. We have to make sure, though, that the cure is not worse than the disease itself. We have to guarantee that things will be better in the new system, and that reform will not cost my patients more.
3) “Can I go to my own doctor?”
It’s important for my patients to be able to see me if they need to. The President recognized the importance of this issue. Some Virginians, like state employees, already know that this may not be so easy under a new system.
