Maureen Day, new this year, teaches kindergarten. She moved here from Richmond where she taught crafts and creative movement. Her son, who now attends the third grade at Spring Mountain, began in a Waldorf school in Richmond. Ms. Day believes that a lot of the philosophy of Waldorf schools makes sense, and she and her son are both happy to be involved in one.
As with the other classes, art is very prevalent in Ms. Day’s class. “The process of making art is a great tool for learning,” she said, more important than the piece of art itself. In Ms. Day’s class the children make bread dough sculptures and masks, take nature walks, sing, play house, recite poetry and dance.
Paige Noel has been with Spring Mountain since the fall of 1990. Ms. Noel previously was in charge of the children’s library in Front Royal and has an A.A. degree in early childhood education. She teaches a class with one first grader and four third graders.
They all share the same classroom and several lessons, but not all. While the third graders are working on their workbooks, the first grader may be working on some sewing at the same time. Ms. Noel stated, “As a teacher, I learn much more about the human experience. Teaching at Spring Mountain has been very nurturing for me.” She has a great intimacy with her students with such a small class.
