Concerning the op-ed article in the Sept. 22 Rappahannock News, regarding Superintendent Wade’s attempted closing of portions of the Skyline Drive, the following should be noted. Facing a budget shortfall, Superintendent Wade spent nearly $80,000 on road signs directing tourists to the park. These signs were co-located and remain so today, with other signs giving the same information. Meantime, the roof over the dining room at the Big Meadows Lodge appears near collapse.
On a recent visit to the park, I discovered that, in the Park Service, it apparently takes six men and two very large trucks to remove a tree from the road. Having lived for the last 20 years on a mile-long mountain driveway, which runs entirely through forest, I have yet to find an instance where it takes more than “me” (1) and my “poor ol’ pickup,” to remove a fallen tree.
It is obvious that the tax money continues to be wasted by bureaucrats. The waste begins well above Superintendent Wade, as I am sure he has little to say about how his money can be spent. This is due to the archaic method our federal government continues to use in dispersing money.
Superindent Wade has $80,000 burning a hole in his budget which most likely could not be allocated for roof repairs, but only for road signs. The Superintendent can not even dictate the manner in which a tree will be removed, as a bureaucrat in Washington, who probably never before in his life cut down a tree, outlined the procedures for such activities.
