Soldiers with shields and bulletproof vests had formed their own blockade around a political demonstration of some kind. There were several hundred people circulating around the fires inside the barricades.
I asked a soldier what was going on. Were these people good guys or bad guys? “Good,” he prompltly answered. He explained that earlier in the day nationalists had been allowed to have a political demonstration, but the OMON - special riot police - had roughed up some of the participants, which had led to the “explosion.”
It turned out my friendly soldier was from Stravropol. He was slightly ashamed when I asked if that was not Gorbachev’s hometown. Yes, it was. His unit itonically had been brought up to Moscow to help deal with the crisis that had its roots in the political activism of one of Stavropol’s very own.
Planks from the wooden sidewalks had been set aflame, and primitive barricades had been made of metal sheeting and pipe from the grand stands that had that had been constructed for what was supposed to have been a peaceful meeting on the Russian territory political rally.
