"Spring Mountain School is the best kept secret in Rappahannock County,” claims Jan Makela of Amissville. Her son Josh, 4, is enrolled in the nursery there. “Josh can’t wait to go to school in the morning. He has no separation anxiety at all. I have found Spring Mountain School to be a very warm and nurturing place.”
Spring Mountain School was started as a play group in the home of Bethany and Arthur Craig in Sperryville in the spring of 1987. Now it is a Waldorf-type school located in the old Washington High School on Mt. Salem Avenue in Washington. The school has an enrollment of 30 students, up from 10 students in the fall of 1991. Last week Ms. Craig approached the Washington Town Council and asked for permission to increase the enrollment limit from 40 to 60 and received approval.
