Virginia’s climate is ideal for growing apples - warm days, cool nights, and rich soil nurtured by consistent rainfall enable our state to grow many crisp, juicy varieties. Red and Golden Delicious, Stayman, Winesap, Rome, Jonathan, and York are just some of the varieties that prosper here.
Due to the abundance, diversity and flavor of fresh apples in Virginia, major companies have developed thriving business processing apples into such popular items as apple juice, apple cider, apple sauce, apple pie filling, apple butter, and frozen apple slices. These products are known nationwide for their quality and can be found on your store shelves under various brand names. On a smaller scale, many state apple growers process locally grown apples into cider and apple butter for sale at local roadside markets and specialty stores.
The natural sweetness and freshness of Virginia apple products make them a consistent favorite on shopping lists for use straight from the package and in many mouthwatering recipes.
