Mountain: President of the Board, nursery school teacher, and office worker.
Most days of the week her nursery school students play in a sandbox which is in her classroom. Some carry large whelk shells full of water and pour it into the sand. Others transfer some of the sand and play with it on top of small tree stumps nearby. This of course makes a mess, but no one is admonished or asked to clean up.
Teachers in this school do not scold or even raise their voices; they prefer to get at the root of the child’s problem by conversing with them quietly and listening. This method must work here. There was not one child out of control or in need of discipline. Everyone seems to work well together, and there is a sense a deep respect for the teachers and students alike.
