The nationalist, Zherenovsky, was blaring away into his loudspeaker exhorting his followers to carry on the struggle. A red banner was draped over some debris that read “We are Russians-God is with us.”
The nationalists had thoughtfully built an “open” barricade that provided a narrow passageway between the comer where my hotel was located and the area that w as supposedly under their control. Press cameras were freely admitted and much general milling around made it difficult to figure out who were the demonstrators and who were the onlokers. The rest of the occupied zone - about 2 acres of the Garden Ring Road from Smolenskaya Metro to Smolensky Square - was like a small battlefield after the shooing.
