The Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia is running a TV ad saying that when a politician is running for another office, we should ask her what she has done in her past offices. Fair enough, let’s look at just a few of Mary Sue Terry’s accomplishments.
In the House of Delegates, Terry, now the Democratic candidate for Governor, was the leader in Virginia’s fight on drunken driving, forcing the blood level for drunkenness down to 0.10 percent. She was chief sponsor of a law that raised the drinking age from 18 to 21.
She developed the highly successful CADRE program to combat children’s drug use. Seventeen other states have copied this program, which won an award from the National Council of State Governments.
As Attorney General, Mary Sue Terry proposed 83 bills that became law, a record in modern Virginia history. She forced the Ford Motor Co. to recall 11,000 ambulances across the country and fix them so that they would not burst into flames.
She required insurance companies to base their rates in Virginia on Virginia’s experience, not the nation’s, saving millions of dollars for Virginians. She convicted political extremist Lyndon LaRouche, nine of his followers and ten corporations of defrauding the elderly of millions of dollars.
Her office handled about 5,000 active cases at any one time; it won eight out of 10 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the best record for any Attorney General in 40 years.
Terry’s Republican opponent has no accomplishments, legislative or otherwise, to compare with hers.
