Piedmont District representative Charles K. “Pete” Estes asked Mrs. Lynch if there was a possibility of getting a grant to pay for the additional salary.
She said that she could apply for grants for books and tapes but not for staff salaries.
Mr. Anderson asked if the entire increase is for the additional salary. Mrs. Lynch said it was for that and 5 percent increases for the other employees. ;
Mr. Warner said he did not expect the library to ask for another 22 percent increase next year. ‘This is another step in getting from a pedestrian system to the information highway,” he said. “I appreciate what you are doing,” he continued. “My basic interest is seeing the real estate taxes are no more than necessary to run the county.”
County Administrator John McCarthy noted that the $9 million budget calls for about $100,000 more in expenses than it raises in taxes. He said this is mainly because of uncertainty about what interest rate the county will get on bonds to borrow $1.3 million to construct a new cell at the landfill.
Chairman Hubert Gilkey said he was concerned about the need to spend more than taxes will raise. He said he could remember when the county had to borrow money to get through part of the fiscal year.
“Some of these are right good sized increases,” he said. “We operate with a certain amount of money, and the only way to get the money is to raise taxes. It’s not a pleasant thing to have to raise taxes.”
