This Saturday June 11 the Old Dominion Ride Inc. celebrates its 20th year with its annual 100 mile and 50 mile rides.
Organized to conduct the first 100 mile, one day, endurance ride east of the Mississippi, the rolling hills of Loudoun County was the initial site. In 1980 the move was made to the present location at the State 4H Center near Front Royal.
The Old Dominion has gained the reputation by its difficulty and quality of management as being one of the most prestigious rides in North America. This resulted in being host for the North America Championship in 1987 and the World Championship in 1988.
For the past several years, in addition to North American riders, riders from Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand have participated. While the course is challenging, it is attainable and has always been sanctioned by the governing body for endurance riding.
