In Rappahannock County General District Court on Tuesday, James Costello, 46, of Huntly, was found guilty of maliciously wounding a dog belonging to Frank Keyser of Page County.
According to Sheriff J.H. Woodward, Mr. Keyser was coon hunting on property near Mr. Costello's last , April 1.
Mr. Costello said a neighbor called him to tell him that he heard dogs and that they might be chasing Mr. Costello’s cattle. In court, Mr. Costello said that when he found one of the dogs on his property, “the dog was looking guilty.”
Thinking that the dogs had been chasing his cattle, Mr. Costello shot and killed one of the dogs.
According to Sheriff Woodward, even though the dog had been on Mr. Costello’s property, the law allows a dog’s owner to go on that property to retrieve their dog. However, when Mr. Keyser found his dog, it had been shot by Mr. Costello.
