With members Newbill Miller and Mark Bailey absent the Washington Town Council held a public hearing on the new town budget.
Town resident Diane Bruce asked several questions about the budget, and Treasurer Brad Fisher answered them. At one point she said, “I’m trying to figure why there are so many labor categories.”
Mr. Fisher and Mayor Dean Morehouse said the town frequently contracts for part-time, temporary labor and that is divided by category into operations, or maintenance or capital improvements.
The budget includes funds for a study of a sewage system, but Mr. Morehouse said he had not prepared a grant application for the study. “Hopefully, this year that will be done,” he said.
The town’s contribution to the fire department is also spread among several categories, Mr. Fisher said. The Washington Volunteer Fire Department prepared a budget that showed the town’s contribution covers about 13.8 percent
