the year 1881 he made his first venture in real estate at the age of 23. Thus he began an odyssey that brought him respect, admiration and envy over a span of many years to come.
J.A. did stop to evaluate his priorities and discovered a helpmate was next in order. After a quiet courtship he won the hand of a beautiful young lady of 21 years who would remain at his side for the remainder of his life.
James A. Engham and Florence Terry were married by the Rev. R.H. Carey at Hopewell Baptist Church March 26, 1890. Three girls were bom of this union, Roberta, Fannie and Clara. Tragically Clara died at the young age of 18 in 1917.
One of his real estate acquisitions included a grist mill called the “Old Totten Mill” located where Alson Atkins later had his Rainbow Riding Stables. The mill was convenient and very pleasant to me as a boy of eight. The building also housed a soft drink bottling business operated by Mr. Stroll.
