uunng tne early morning nours of August 16, 1935 J.A. departed this life with his family at his bed- i side. A newspaper account of his death listed him as one of the wealthiest colored men in Rappahannock County.
The crowd at the funeral was smaller than might have been expected. This was the time of a polio epidemic when all but essential assemblages were strictly prohibited. Children younger than 12 were prohibited from attending. I was old enough to go but two cousins stayed with a neighbor.
Today, one grandson, after leaving the military service went on to be a printer at the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. Now retired, he is a consultant with a large printing company in that capital.
As the other grandson, I am still pondering the apple gathering decision. No more apples, no more trees, but the lesson of that episode will reamin for generations to come.
