My grandfather was a barber, farmer and jeweler, one of the county’s original entrepreneurs.
His memory shall forever be source of strength and inpiration to me. His lifetime achievements reflect the story of how one determined Black man faced the harsh challenge of a very difficult era and prevailed.
The story begins in 1858 and moves fast forward to the year of his' death in 1935.
At an early age James A. Engham, known widely as “J.A.,” displayed such ingenuity and intellect that he surprised, amazed and captivated his contemporaries during the post-civil war days.
The length of the work day and its dead-end hours, “Soons yo kin, till soons yo kant,” led him to declare, “There must be a better way.”
