Because of the attention given to the Republican Convention which nominated Oliver North for the U.S. Senate this past weekend, many people don’t even seem to know there will be a primary election to select the Democratic Party nominee for the senate seat.
Incumbent Sen. Charles Robb has three challengers in .the primary. Sylvia Clute, a Richmond attorney who founded Ithe Women’s Bank in that city, decided to run when Sen. -Robb voted to confirm Clarence Thomas for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. She is fighting an uphill battle, campaigning on a single payer system for health insurance, for a portion of funds from increased tobacco taxes to be directed at retraining tobacco workers and helping tobacco ;farmers find alternative crops, and for military conversion -funds to be used to make Virginia a leader in environmental technology.
